Take away the uncharacteristic spelling (if you research Basque, you'll see that the X is prominent in their language), and this wine is made from the Garnacha grape that many lovers of Spanish wines look for.

This wine also received one of the most exciting and intriguing reviews that I've ever read for any wine, especially for a wine in this price range. This review is written below, and I'm sure that you'll be as excited as I was when when you read it.

Of course, we did taste the wine, and it was quite good. Almost barrel sample-like, this is a very pure expression of Garnacha. There is no oak influence, so you are getting pure fruit. The wine is bright, with ripe fruit flavors, that come together into a surprisingly well-balanced and long finish. Do I find the intensity compares to $50+ wines as the review does? No, unfortunately, I don't. Although, I am sure that this wine will continue to integrate as it settles down in the bottle - it is from the 2011 vintage after all. For a wine to open up, sit down and drink on its own or with your meal, though, you won't go wrong with this Garnacha!

Rated 91 Points by the Wine Advocate - "Another incredible value and full-throttle wine made from 100% Grenache, Herencia Altes’s vineyards are situated high on the hillside above the village of Batea, where grapes have been grown since the 15th century. This offering, from very old vines and aged completely in concrete, is a naked, unadulterated, unmanipulated effort with great minerality (from the chalky, limestone soils) and an intensity and richness (from the old vines) that are normally found in $50+ wines. As I told Eric Solomon, at these ridiculously low prices, consumers will never suspect the wines are at this level of quality. This outstanding 2011 offers loads of kirsch, raspberry, licorice, garrigue and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and dense, it is best consumed over the next 2-3 years. A killer value, it is a custom cuvee made for Eric Solomon by proprietor Nuria Altes."

Enjoy this terrific value!

Cheers!
