As with a handful of Tuscan estates, when I went to the Castello di Bolgheri website, I was inundated with the history of the castle, going back to the 1200s and being passed from various Counts and Countesses to Barons and Baronesses. Though I have to say that just looking at the castle makes me want to add it to my upcoming Tuscan itinerary this summer!
Another interesting fact is that over half of the land owned within the Castello di Bolgheri is planted with Olive trees, with the remainder grapes. If the Varvara, their entry level wine, is this good, I can't wait to taste their olive oil!
Back in 1997, the vineyards were planted with the proper and legal Bolgheri DOC grapes, which are the grapes that are known as the components of a Super Tuscan: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot.
Although the winery describes the Varvara as a wine to drink in the more immediate term, and it does drink very well right now, this is by no means a simple entry level wine. In fact, the winery ages this wine for 10 months in oak casks, followed by another 6 months aging in bottle before it is released.
The Wine Spectator was also very excited about this wine, giving it a 90 Point rating, as well as the Smart Buys designation.
From the Wine Spectator: "Dark and brooding, exuding blackberry, black cherry and violet aromas and flavors. Fresh and firm, this is beautifully integrated and concludes with fruit and spice accents. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Best from 2014 through 2022. 3,750 cases made."
