Black Pearl Vineyards Oro Red 2008
This delicious, 91 Point Wine Advocate rated wine hails from the Paarl region of South Africa. Representing terrific value at $14.99 per bottle, this wine, made at an 11 year old boutique winery, shows what modern winemaking can produce in South Africa.
A blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, if I tasted this wine blind, I would have thought it was from Australia. It is a big, fruity wine, with lots of alcohol, yet containing structure that isn't normally there in a wine at this price point. The Wine Advocate review expresses similar thoughts about its modern stance, and New World vibrance.
The winery is owned and family run by the Nash's who relocated to South Africa from New Hampshire in 1995, and have been making wine ever since. The winery is located at the foot of Paarl Mountain, and is run, including the winemaking, by the women of the Nash family. A great story, which in turn, produces some great wine!
Wine Advocate rated 91 Points - "A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Shiraz, the 2008 Oro has a fresh, vibrant nose not dissimilar to a McClaren Vale with ebullient, mint-scented glossy black fruits. The palate is full-bodied and very rich with an almost honeyed texture. Moderately tannic, very forward and opulent with a ravishing, polished finish, this is a very modern, svelte Cabernet/Shiraz that is well crafted by winemaker Mary-Lou Nash. Sure, it is a tad on the alcoholic side, but it is deftly crafted, keenly priced and should age well. Drink 2012-2018."
Cheers!
